They estimated the production costs for tilapia to be R45/kg (US$2.7) and the retail price was estimated at R38/kg (US$2.3). This clearly makes the culture of tilapias unprofitable in South Africa.

The average annual per capita fish consumption in Sub- Saharan Africa is approximately 8.9 kg. It is difficult to quantify demand trends specifically for tilapia due to scanty data; however nearly all tilapia produced in Sub-Saharan Africa is locally consumed, with very limited exports to overseas markets.

In contrast, feed production in Kenya is restricted to farm-made feeds using locally available feed stuffs. Tilapia culture (Oreochromis spp.) is widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, and was reported in all the countries under study. With the exception of Kenya, the formal feed industry supplied the culture industry with formulated feeds.
